These little cuties were born yesterday! I got them to keep my sole peachick company. I hadn't ever thought I would have beautiful French Black Copper Marans, but they were the only two chicks for sale in town last night, and they are so sweet. Now, I don't know what I'll actually end up with, but my just-for-fun guess is one roo and one hen.

Cannonball aka Fathead (on the left) is my pick for roo-to-be:
-Comes running when I call
-Is very vocal and louder than the other BCM
-Pushes back at the peachick when it pecks
-Sometimes pecks at or pushes the other BCM
-Bigger, with a HUGE head! (Does that mean anything? Maybe it's smart, lol.)
-Just look at that obvious comb! And it was born yesterday!

Goldenthroat aka Buttercup (on the right):
-Has a tiny grey comb which doesn't extend as far towards the nostrils
-Doesn't start fights and rarely will push back
-Quieter, and (although very friendly) does not come charging forward to say hi to me the way the peachick and big BCM do.

I know you really can't sex a one or two day old chick (can you?), but I'm happy to hear your guesses on these two. I'll update regularly with pics and behaviour notes... but it's not over until the big boy sings. ;-)

Way too young to tell for sure. Day old chicks can be sexed if they are a sex link breed or vent sexed. But if I were to just guess, I would agree with you. The one on the left has a big comb for such a little guy!
Yes, there is just no way to tell so early - completely agreed! Thanks for chiming in, in the spirit of fun. That one on the left does have a ridiculously big comb for a newborn and a big voice, too. May just be a loud, hearty girl... but I'm still betting on boy.
This morning:
Cannonball: Hi! Hi! HI!!!
Goldenthroat: (waits): Oh, um... hello? I'm here, too.

I love the way brand-new babies already have personalities.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that the one on the left is going to be your cockerel. Marans show combs in the cockerels early and that one already has a larger comb. I could be wrong. Let us know as they grow.

Thanks for your guess! I enjoy hearing what you have to say. I have no experience with Marans, so that is interesting to hear about the comb timing. I'll be sure to keep posting pics, so check back in.

I have never raised them myself, but have looked at lots of pics of them on here and the little cockerels are easily spotted early on. Time will tell on your two little ones.

I have two 2 day old black copper Maran chicks. They were both born with little combs! I can see the teeth on them. Do you think that's a breed thing or they're both very much roosters?? :)
