Bugs in Feed

We bought feed from TSC one time that had bugs it. We called them and told them. We took it back over, so they could dispose of it, as we didn't want to just throw it in our trash and have a possible infestation throughtout our entire yard, not knowing what they were. They took it back with no problem, and we got another bag, bug free. It's important you let the store know, so they don't get their stock contaminated, too.

One of the feed stores around here had bags of feed for half price. I checked the manufacture date and it wasn't too old and was about to buy it when I noticed a sign that said the reason for the sale was that the feed was infested with bugs.

I'm sure a bunch of people still bought it.

It is never recommended to feed your chickens food or grains that have live bugs in it.  Chances are that the birds are not going to get all of the bugs, and we don’t want those insects spreading throughout your farm or household where they can contaminate other things. I would recommend tossing this feed out and getting a fresh batch.

I agree. The last thing I want here is an infestation of any types of bugs:)

i would get food grade DE and add a bit to the chicken feed, this will kill any bugs before they become a problem.. there is also mixed studies as to whether the chickens eating DE will help control internal parasites as well...so may have added benefits.   we add a bit to the chickens food and sprinkle around coop and run as well....
I use DE here, also but I don't put it in the feed. Instead, I add it to all the dust baths(for the chickens and quail). My chickens do free range on a small plot of our land also,so I occasionally dust the area lightly with the DE. I also dust each coop nest and the inside of the chicken coops, too. My ducks also free range in a separate area, Ann's I lightly dust their pen with DE. Our biggest problem, especially in our duck pen is flies. We've tried everything, but they are really terrible here. I am careful to not breathe in the DE as I'm using it,and as I do the spreading of it when the birds aren't near the area.

I don't use it in feed either. I think claims it is helpful are dubious at best.

For the flies, try Farm360.
If they are still out of control, use Golden Malrin fly bait.

i found the only way to get rid of pesky flys, is to name them and accept them.....just make sure the screens to your windows on your home are closed, or not even names will help! lol! we have flys here real bad whether we have chickens or not....

for flys, this year spring I going to try and put the parasites around the property....been trying to get a mixture from the forest service for ones that fight bark beetles as well!

Once again BYC answered another question in the posts. I found these little weevils in my bag of cracked corn and had no clue what they were. A quick search and all my questions are answered. Ty everyone.
