is it required i trim my hens nails? obviously if they are really long, but at what length should i look at trimming so they don't get out of control? or should i leave them since they are free range chickens?

I only trim if it's necessary. Most of mine don't require trimming. I have one with curled toes that I trim and a 7 year old hen with an arthritic toe who needs the nail trimmed occasionally. Two out of about 90, so nail trimming isn't commonly needed, but mine are free range, so maybe confined birds need it more often.

They should be able to keep them in check from scratching, they are great diggers.
My birds are confined to a large run, they dig some huge holes and haven't needed trimming.
