Mean Hen

My dark Cornish hen is acting very strange. She's starting to peck at the other birds and she refuses to come near me when I put my hands down to pet her. She used to be a loving hen but any ideas what might have happened???hmm.pnghmm.png

Molting?

Maybe she's become...the boss!  Head of the flock, including you.  Watch her, and make sure she isn't limping, just staying away from the flock fluffed up at times..in other words, make sure she isn't ill.   I hope she gets back to her..nice self.

I tend to agree...sounds like she's vying for top of the pecking order status.

Welcome to BYC! It's great to have you.

I've had hens who began to get aggressive over food as well. Do you handfeed her often? She may be using chicken-language to tell you Hey! Feed me! She may also simply be turning into a big old jerk. Either way, whenever she does it just flick her on the beak or comb. She'll learn soon.

Nice to meet you Zach, Welcome to Backyard chickens. Is she eating, drinking, and pooping okay? Does she ever mingle with the flock or only to peck them? Is she laying? Sounds like she woke up on the wrong end of the roost.

She isnt laying yet but she gets along fairly well with the others until I put them in the run or the coop. Then she starts acting like a maniac before bed. I give them mealworms and a type of Japanese Beatle that they love eating off of the grape vine. But they never fight over their treats. Do you know of any ways to soften her up?
