feeding bread to chickens

Like anything else, in moderation and as a once in a while treat, there is no harm. I personally eat whole grain bread, so that's what my chickens get if I have any left over. Their favorite treats are the dried mealworms. When I shake that bag, they come running!
In fact, even when I'm out, they come running because they think I have them. I will also give them corn right on the cob and that gives them something to do for a while. I go back and clean the cornless cobs out of the run later on when they've finished.

Thanks, I think I'm going to try taking them off bread for awhile. Try giving them something more healthy. They are spoiled though, I gave them cabbage yesterday and they turned their noses up at it.

Wow, that's funny. Cabbage is expensive here too. I think they would love it if I cooked it for them. They really are spoiled. They turn their nose up at night crawlers too. I give them to them and they don't pay any attention. I think it's the thrill of the hunt for them. One of my chickens follows me around when I'm digging in the yard and if it sees a bug it's gone in a tenth of a second. Real funny!

I tend to give them the layer feed and cracked corn with occasional treats of bread, mealworms or other healthy scraps. They love left over scrambled eggs and cooked grits on Saturdays! That's about the only day I have to cook breakfast, and they enjoy it right along with the family. The dogs get jealous when I give any of it to the girls, but the dogs get their share too.

I agree, our chickens are pretty board at far less then 1/2 slice of bread each before they move on. We feed our chickens about 1/2 a loaf in the morning when we let them out, 3-4 times a week. We do have access to some free day old bread. There is so much waste out there it is crazy....and chickens eat most things that grow, move or crawl so I suspect the worst about about bread for them is they don't have to work for it....they may get a little fat...and there isn't much wrong with a little extra weight on the birds. We also haven't noticed any issue with laying while feeding bread.....
