Indian Fantails or Capuchines?

Hello, long time no see!

Anyways, I'll get on with this quickly. I'm currently looking into getting a pair of fancy pigeons for companionship and eventually to hatch out some little squabs and rear them to sell as companions to others who want to experience what it's like to have these lovely birds.

However, I am having a hard time choosing between my two favorite breeds (and I only want two birds for now, of the same breed), Indian fantails, and Old Dutch Capuchines. I love the appearance of both breeds, but I am having trouble finding information on the general temperament of the fantails.

Does anyone here happen to know much about fantail temperaments? I know that the capuchines are very friendly birds generally, and make excellent companions, but I've been in love with fantails since I was a child, so if they generally have a friendly disposition then I'll likely end up with a pair of those.

Fantails were the first breed I got! They're definitely pretty friendly. Mine will walk around my feet and coo at me. They're a little skittish to be caught but calm down nicely once I have them.

I personally would go with the Indian fantails They are poor fliers when compared to homers but still more predator savey then the Capuchines. I find by hand feeding shelled unsalted peanuts even my homers (who are know to be aloof) will fly to me on comand.

I have both Old Dutch Capuchines and Fantails.

The fantails are much more placid, calm and friendly... very steady and not easily excited.

The Capuchines are more feisty and lively. The males can be a bit aggressive with each other.. and the females are really quiet and sweet.

I personally would go for the fantails if you just want a pair as pets... as they like to have close contact with their owners.. like being tickled and petted.. and as they are a bit lazy.. they will stay sitting on you arm or shoulder for a long time.

The Capuchines are more lively.. and can't seem to stay still for long, preferring to fly about and explore.






 
My younger sibling brought up a valid concern with getting Indian fantails. The cage I have indoors is very large, but it has horizontal cage bars, which apparently would be very unsuitable for fantails as it would break their tail feathers. Is this true? If so, what would be a good alternative for housing them inside (they'd mostly just use the cage for sleeping/nesting, otherwise they're going to be free to roam my room and the house, as our other house pigeon does).

Why don't you put some fine wire or plastic mesh on the inside of the cage to stop the tail feather going through the bars?

You can cut it to size and tie it on with some cord or cable ties. Then you won't have to go buy another cage.
 
That would be a good idea, and it wouldn't be expensive or difficult, either! I can probably find some suitable mesh at the local hardware place.
