Gender and Breed please?

Sorry, I just noticed your last question. You can tell she's molting by how scraggly she looks. She missing quite a few feathers, especially around her tail and hackles. That coupled with the time of year says molt. Either that or she's got something else going on, but molt is most likely. Have you checked them for parasites yet?

I was holding anothet chicken I got from the same place a few days prior to getting these two and I think it was lice that fell off on my leg. I bought some stuff to dust them with and dewormer pellets to add in with their food since the store didn't have the dewormer you add to the water. Hoping it works ok! She is "rumpless" I believe is the term...but you'd still say she's missing some tail feathers?

So I just spoke to the guy a couple hours ago where I bought these chickens and he swears they are both 5-6 months old and that they are both Ameraucanas. He said whoever told me the hen is a mix breed and the rooster is a Easter egger is misinformed. He swears they are full bred Ameraucanas and 5-6 months old. He also said they are not molting. He at least admitted they may have mistook the rooster for a pullet....But I won't be buying from this place again!

Wow I just spoke to the guy a couple hours ago where I bought these chickens and he swore up and down they were both 5-6 months old and that they were both Ameraucanas.
The guy that sold you them has no idea what an Ameraucana is. He likely ordered the parent stock from a hatchery. And most hatcheries sell their Easter Eggers as Ameraucana. And most people honestly believe that that is what they are getting. The never bother to figure it out for themselves.

The cockerel could possibly be a Blue Wheaton Ameraucana and be purebred. That top one is not a pure Ameraucana color, though. It's hard to tell from the top photo if she's missing tail feathers or if she is, indeed, rumpless. Although, Ameraucanas are not a rumpless breed but Araucanas are. It is true that many hatcheries sell Easter Eggers are Ameraucanas, so it is always a "buyer beware" situation with that. He may not be purposely trying to mislead you.

If you were buying for breeding pure Ameraucanas - don't. If you were buying for pretty eggs, then see what the top one lays for you. If you're looking for a pretty rooster to add some color to your hens, then keep that cockerel - I bet he'll turn out to be a handsome fellow. Best of luck with them!

Mine laid a light green egg yesterday. First egg I've gotten from her or any of my chickens since we brought them home and wormed them.
