D'OH! Thanks for the help! How often do you change out the bedding in the nests? Our girls just started laying two weeks ago, and I have pine shavings in the nest boxes, too.

When ever the eggs you collect begin to be soiled. There is really no predicting. Some times a chicken or you will break an egg in the nest for numerous reasons. Which results in a switching of bedding at any time.

So, I have found on the ground as bedding I LOVE grass hay. I change bedding once a week. They keep it turned nicely looking for grass seed and other goodies in the hay. I have noticed my coop smells very healthy. In the nest boxes I like pine shavings. I just find this keeps my eggs nice and clean.

I have debated putting pine shavings down before for bedding, but the cost issue always outweighs in my mind. I have a pretty large coop and would need at least 5-6 bags just to cover the floor (dirt). Grass hay is readily available, and it's SO easy to clean out of the coop.

Thanks for the info laceyyates! :) The cost issue of pine shavings for my floor would be a deterrent for me as well.
