Good Morning All,

My wife and I are new to quail raising. About three months or so ago we got our first four. They are two males and two females. We originally housed them together, but soon noticed that one male was very aggressive with one female. We separated them into two coops - each with a male and female. This worked well until two days ago. The aggressive male showed no aggression at all to his pen mate. Two mornings ago I found her dead and it was clear that it was a fight that caused it. This was not a happy morning.

The female that was killed was a prolific layer and we very much enjoy the eggs. The second female lays well but has never laid a usable egg. They are rubber like with no shell.

With this I have two questions:

1. What do we need to do to get our female to lay good eggs?

2. What is the best course of action for our aggressive male (we have named him O.J.)? We do not want to bring another female in with him due to his aggression.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

More females would be a good start - 2-3 females per male is a good ratio to divide the male's attention. They can be quite aggressive at times. At times you do get a couple that just don't get on so I don't know if I would discount the lone male just yet, but I'm sure more experienced keepers will be along to answer that.

What is your setup and what do you feed them?

I found that aggressive/bullying behaviour was significantly reduced when I gave my birds more space and more furniture - big brnahces to run under, boxes with a big arch cut out of either side to make a tunnel, a corner dust bath set slightly away from the corner itself so they can run behind it, that sort of thing.

I would cull the aggressive male and add 3 to 4 more with the remaining roo and hen. You have to be careful not to just put them all together right away though. they should be in adjoining cages able to see and hear each other for a week then rearrange a cage so that it is "new", place them all in then watch for issues.
