Need some tips... I'm planning on getting a cockatiel, but should I adopt, or buy one? Now as for adopting, I'm sure these birds will be kind of scared and it might be hard for me to tame them. I have parakeets and finches, but having a cockatiel would be my first. Now as for buying, I hear its better to adopt, also, they are EXPENSIVE. 150 dollars. Now don't I get to adopt for freee? I don't want a bird that I won't be able to tame though. Omg, I'm SO confused on what to do... Which is better? I want a cockatiel that I can love and handle. And is Northeast Avian Rescue a good place? I think it's my closest bird avain adoption center.
 
Have never heard of a free adoption. That said, the rest is up to you. Research all your options. Might not hurt to think about how much time you would have to invest in taking on a very young bird (buying from breeder). It's kind of six one way, half a dozen the other, though.
 
Don't have a clue for chickens. You would just have to inquire with whomever you are considering.
You definitely want to know beforehand.
 
I would recommend checking out the birds the adoption center has and asking the employees what the bird is like when they interact with it. This may seem like an obvious thing to do but it is very important because they interact with the bird everyday. Also ask if they have some information about the birds history before it came to the center. Many birds come from situations that caused them to be flighty or perhaps even aggresive but also many adoption birds are perfectly fine and friendly. Regarding the fees if you adopt a cockatiel you won't save much money as the rescue center will most likely charge an adoption fee. Also you will probably have to purchase a new cage, toys, and food, for your cockatiel although sometimes the center may supply some of those things it is unlikely. So in the end you will only save a little money adopting but for some it is worth it because you get to rescue an animal. The decision is yours.
 
Thanks. On this specific place they don't have any adoption fees, and they have over 20 cockatiels to choose from. I was planning on asking which was the most tame, and where they came from because some birds are mistreated so badly, they cant even be hand fed. They do say though, that they work on the rough, ROUGH edges before they start for adoption, so thats good. Also, this place isn't too far away from where I live, Its like an hour or so. As for cages, and toys, I'm going to buy a big cage and put the current toys that the parakeets have in it, and I'm going to put both of my 2 budgies and my tiel in it. I'm pretty sure I think I'm going to adopt... What do you say?
 
That's a great idea. I don't really have a lot of experience with cockatiels but I did some research a while back and considered getting one but decided not to. I would be wary of putting a cockatiel in the same cage as a smaller budgie unless the cockatiel is rather friendly and the cage is quite large but ultimately the decision is yours. Best of luck.

I read up on this when I got my weiros (cockatiels) and decided against it. The budgies can actually attack the weiros, not just the other way around and because the weiros like to sit and climb about, the flitty-flightiness of the budgies can annoy them. I decided to keep them separate.

As for adoption, I took in a pair when their owner was having to move house suddenly. They are fantastic little guys. They are not overly tame, but that's because I just let them be to do their thing. It would not be difficult to tame them to be handled more, if I wanted to. They are fantastic birds, you'll love it.
