Sexing Welsummers

I have to agree, out of the 3 only the second looks like a Welsummer. If you bought all Welsummers, possibly the chicks got mixed up at some point before you got them? I got a Buff Orp that turned out to be a Buff Rock, for example.

Sounds like you're not too picky about the breeds at least. They all look like nice, healthy birds!

I ordered them from Murray McMurray. I ordered three Welsummers because they were only offered as straight run, and I wanted to end up with at least one pullet. So, in that sense, I got exactly what I wanted.

I'm not sure what the other options are that they might have gotten mixed/subbed with, but, like you said, it doesn't really matter. As long as he's pretty and relatively docile, his breed is irrelevant. I'm curious as to what he'll look like as an adult now, though. Would a Production Red have had the chipmunk markings as a chick? The other two Production Reds I received (subbed for the Barred Rock I ordered but didn't get, I'm guessing) were a mostly solid chestnut color as day olds. If he's not a Welsummer, what are the other options aside from Production Red, based on his coloring? I'd like to look up pictures of what his adult coloration might be.

Production Reds can have chipmunk type markings. And Production Red is really the only option that fits.

That's a little bit annoying, considering McMurray charges more than twice as much for a straight run Welsummer as a Production Red cockerel. Oh, well, at least the one pullet worked out.

I've heard not-so-great things about the temperament of Production Reds, especially the roosters. I really hope he doesn't live up to their reputation - I've started to really like him.

I have to tell you guys this tidbit. Last June I hatched 8 well Summers and seven out of the eight were cockerels. I kept one of the Cockrells for a while until I had to let him go because I live in the city. I tried the collar with him for a while and I do not recommend those. I went out one morning and he was choking from the collar. I ended up selling him to a person that had just the opposite. They had seven hens and no cockerel. I kept some eggs when I sold him and then I incubated them and ended up with six Welles. I'm thinking it looks like there are a lot of pullets this time. I'm going by the dark spot on the head and the eyeliner. They are only two days old.
