This weekend we went to buy some new chickens. We processed 5 last week to clean up the flock. Now we have 1 rooster, 1 hen and 1 Mamma Hen (with 9 chicks). Last weekend we won (in an Auction) 3 Red Burbon turkeys (from April).

So now we have 2 new Serbian Long Crowing hens, and we got gifted 2 Nis Tumbler Pigeons!

So we have all these houses and I am wondering if we NEED to build one more for the pigeons? Is there any where we can put them or do we NEED a special built pigeon loft?
Photo1&2 Hen&Chick nesting/hatching house.... they got the boot yesterday and the pigeons are in there now.

Photo 3 Temporary or overflow chicken house,(space for 6) where the new hens are living until we put them with the flock.

Photo 4&5 our Good Egg Inn, can house 10 hens. May have room up top for a pigeon loft up top?!?!

Photo 6&7 Turkey Run...Small kids shed where they nest and roost at night. Plus covered/netted run where they are in the day.

I read the "rules" and I wonder if we can manage to keep the pigeon babies away from the chickens. We had one "found" pigeon in our yard that the chickens pecked to death to the dismay of our son. I don't want to do set us up for disappointment. The new hens and the new pigeons lived together in the last place, but they had different "houses".

Also the pigeons are older, how old??? But I wonder if we should let them out to fly at all? We picked them up from about 4 kilometers away I wonder if they would head home to the flock?

Thanks for the words of wisdom.

I have 66 trips around the sun. I have been raising birds for decades.

"TRUST ME".

You will have problems chickens are little dinosaurs, meat eaters, opportunist, and will eat just about anything. My experience is give half a chance chickens will eat pigeon eggs, squabs, and any injured pigeon. They also bully any pigeon it comes in contact with.

My advice is save yourself some heartache petition an area off with chicken wire in your coop to house pigeons. with a a trap to serve as their own private entrance.

If that is not feasible check out this link maybe you will see something that may meet your requirements and budget:

I am quoted as saying mine lived together without problem. That was true. Until they didn't.
You and I learned our lesson the same way buddy.

Thank you for posting.

I would definitely build them a small loft for them. Chickens + pigeons = not happy pigeons and not happy owners.

I don't own pigeons, but my uncle has kept them for a long time. He keeps his homers in with the chickens and they just stay at the top where their water and food is. Their perches and nesting boxes are up at the top. So if they can fly and you provide their own little homes closer to the top, you should be fine. As for pigeons that can't fly, not a good idea.

No... It will not work at all... believe it.

In the end the chickens always find a way to get to the pigeon nests and destroy eggs, eat squabs, or seriously injure birds.

Thank you all for your words and years of wisdom. I am patiently waiting for the building of our new pigeon house. Feeder and water-er I can manage but the boys are at it this week.
No Pigeons with Chickens, Got it!

Hi, We let the pigeons out after a few weeks. They are really happy. They are NIS (from Croatia) HighFlyers, Rollers, Tumblers, they don't go far any how. Even now after months they fly from their house up on our roof and hang out there all day in the sun, then fly back home each night (20meters). They never leave the yard.

Youcouldjust hang light wire rabbit cage accessable to adult standing but not chooks, at upper part of tall coop. Each female pigeon given two nests. Tumbler type breeds like yours won't go too far generally, but will Arial predators or storms relocate them then they go for whoever closer sometimes. I've sold good Birmingham rollers to miles away across mountainous woods, and after apparently was neglected after their dog ate it's mate, remaining pigeon dropped down home out of horrible storm one morning soaked to bones showing. Sadly it's health deteriorating rapidly, it died. Guy came round right after died asking if it came back and wanting me to replace pair for free saying older breeder pair contained the one he lost. he didn't keep them caged and safe even at night, just left roost on window ledge of porch exposed n complained they never reproduced.
