deb, Thanks! So true on the different worlds...and it took BYC to bring us all together.

I thought your interview was fantastic. Loved hearing all about your family, animals and gardening. We have a lot in common. Dh and I plan on moving out to a couple of acres, so I can do my chickens but also have a big garden. I had a beautiful yard until I got the chickens, lol. And lastly, I am also a Mary.

Thanks for sharing,
Mary

Thank you for the kind words, Mary.
My flock has enough room that they don't need to bother with my garden (I have an 18" fence around it to keep the rabbits out, so the flock passes by) or flowerbeds. I do put small wire cages/supports, and sometimes wire on the ground, around newly planted items to protect them. We were here almost seven years before I got chickens so many things were established before the flock arrived. When you are looking at property, look for something with shrubs or evergreens that will give them cover when they are free ranging. Hawks are the cause of all but one of my 6 predator losses...the other was due to a neighbor's dog.
