Ok sorry to just jump in, but I saw one comment saying not to keep quail on wire? Can someone elaborate and explain, or point me to a link?

Their poop dries and builds up on the wire and can cut their feet, causing bumble foot. I've always kept mine on solid flooring with bedding. I'd rather change bedding than scrub wire.

Oh! Yeah we use a little brush (one of those small dustpan brushes) to brush the poop down into the dropping tray we have. The plan we found had a wire floor. With solid flooring and bedding, do you have to clean it out daily? Do eggs get crushed or lost in the bedding easily?

Good News: Albert Went Broody!
Bad News: She abandoned them when they were hatching
I put the eggs in the incubator, and a fluffy little chick hatched. I'm concerned that he has splayed leg?

I had the exact same thing just happen with my Button quail - they started pipping and the mother got off the nest and stayed off. So I had to hatch them under a heat lamp. 5 are doing fabulously, but 1 had its eyes glued shut (I didn't realise until day 2, this being my first time with Buttons) and I have been nursing it along. I did not think it was going to survive but at 5 days old its still alive. I'm still feeding it (raw japanese quail egg) every 2 and a half hours and it is the scrappiest little thing you could ever imagine. But it obviously wants to live so I'll keep going and hope for the best. How is your baby doing? Did any more hatch? Sometimes their legs look a bit spread out but they find their feet after a couple of days. Just make sure the flooring isn't slippery. I found even paper towels were too slippery for the Buttons so I gave them grit sheets like you'd put in a bird cage.

His splay has gotten worse. He's in the incubator with 3 japanese quail eggs and 6 button eggs. I have been monitoring his progress and feeding him quail mash(baby). My litte sister insists we call him yellow as he's a Texas A&M. I've been doing a bit of reasearch into splay-leg and it is possible to treat

I had a Japanese baby hatch with bent toes. In a day they were straightened out once we'd taped them up (they are so tiny that was not a fun job). So they don't take long to come right. Hopefully your Yellow will come right quickly. Yellow - like our finch called Orange. He was named by our 5 year old son and is mostly white with dark brown splotches so he's not even a little bit orange!

I know this is an old thread, but I couldn’t find anywhere else to put these photos of Beane. He’s a rescued male tibetan(?) tuxedo coturnix.
