Help Roo or hen?

Thread Starter
This chicken is about 6 months old. No crowing yet. We had a mille fluer rooster that we traded for this barred rock (which looked very much like a hen at the time). The mille fleur was crowing at 3 months. When we brought the barred rock home it was about the same size as our now 6 month old buff. Now as you can see is significantly larger. What you you all think? If he is a roo, when do you think the crowing will begin?

Definitely cockerel, and he's a mixed breed not a Barred Rock.

Agreed. If this was a pure barred rock it would have to be a female because of the dark barring (males get two copies of the barring gene making them lighter). Because it is a male and dark barring it has to be a cross!

:welcome

First poster's bird is a mixed breed cockerel. Crowing could be any day now, or not for a few months. Just can't predict.

Second poster's birds all look female, but we can't see two of them well enough to say for sure.
