Hello All,

I have read a few similar postings but have not seen many conclusions. I have an 18 month old Java hen who limped for a while and then recovered. However, now she is unable to use one leg and I am able to feel a rather large bump under her wing above the hip joint (not that chickens have hips per se). Is there any trick to reducing an out-of-socket condition with chickens?

Having butchered many chickens it is hard to imagine how they could seperate or dislocate the primary leg joint. I will inspect again tomorrow and see if I can shed any more light on this thread.

We had a RIR roo who we think did something to his hip. We think he tried to jump the fence, missed, and got his spur stuck which possibly could've popped the joint out. We just made sure that he was getting around okay, and he was always quite happy to chase the hens

Although, the question remains how did she hurt herself? Just make sure she isn't getting picked on, and can still get to the roost. How bad is "unable to use one leg" ?

She has been hanging out mostly inside the coop although she is able to get out and around. She is not getting picked on right now but she is molting which makes it harder to keep her warm.

RE one leg - she is not able to use it at all. She uses it for balance but otherwise just hops on one leg.

I am attaching a picture to show the large "bump" around her joint. I tried to manipulate it today and I could see the bone moving under the bump but was unable to reduce it. I cannot tell if the bump is swelling or the ball of the leg bone. It is pretty firm for swelling.

I'd say as long as she isn't getting beat up and can make it to her food and water and stuff, then just keep a close eye on her.
That feather loss doesn't look like molting, it looks like you've to many roosters! If she's having trouble getting warm, maybe get a hen saddle for her. NOT a chicken sweater - those make handy little hawk carry off cases.
 
It is a combination of both molting and treading. The heavy treading roo has recently departed this earth so she is recovering faster now.

Notice the fleece and canvas hen saddle in the top picture (made right here at Green Meadow Farms ;-)

Still unsure of how to treat. Right now she is getting plenty of food, water, and rest. I will re-evaluate this weekend.

Can you post a video of her walking? The only thing I can think of is her leg being broken

I will try this weekend to capture some video. It should be warmer than it has been the past few days.

I am still puzzled about the large bump up so high past the hip socket.
