Durable water founts?

Hello Fellow Flocksters,

I know this is could be a subjective/senstive issue but I am curious as to what ya'll recommend for water founts.

I am over-the-top frustrated with a certain brand of poultry products made in Minnesota. The founts are very pricey and we treat them well but they seem to last about a year and then begin to leak and become difficult to separate to fill. The farm and ranch supply stores here in the Rocky Mountain region offer nothing else so we are held hostage to one particular brand. I gave up on their one-gallon watering pails as those broke as fast as I could buy them.

Looking forward to your insights!

P.S. I should note that we have two separate breeding clans comprised of over 40 birds.

During warm weather I just use open water containers. I change out the water when it gets soiled or when chickens scratch debris into it. During cold winter I use converted Crock Pots to heat the water to luke warm temperatures to prevent freezing. I accomplish this with the use of a dimmer switch.

For winter I use a 10 (maybe 15, I don't remember) gallon semi transparent tote with lid, horizontal nipples, and a stock tank heater that is okay to use in plastic. Kept the water thawed to the coldest we got here last winter which was -10 in northern Montana and only needed filled once a week. It's still in good condition so will use it again this winter.

I am not familiar with horizontal nipples. I use vertical nipples mounted on PVC pipe for warm weather use. Where did you source the horizontal nipples?

Very nice. Thank you. I'm surprised I haven't encountered those before. That is one of the great things about this site. I am always learning from my fellow flocksters.

The advantages of horizontal nipples is that they don't drip like the vertical ones often do and they are less likely to freeze in cold weather.

This is what I use year round. Shown with homemade heater base.

GC-Raptor,

How is your fount holding up? Mine start leaking as they fail to maintain a vacuum after a while. I use a PVC and nipple system indoors but I really like having a fount outside. Especially during warmer weather.

I've only used this one for 5 months, but it stays in the coop,so it's not exposed to the elements. You do have to be gentle with them. I use a pail under the coop and a 4 quart galvanized chicken bath in hot weather in the pen.
