Hey peep's

The weather is turning bit crap here and I have no dry place to store my cut log rings. Its pine wood and I wanted to know if anyone sees a serrious risk of placing a pile of log rings inside my covered chicken run..... The logs are about year old and well seasoned. Although the bark is pretty damp.... Just a bit concerned about diseases if the chooks try to eat the beatles, woodlouse and worms which seem to inhabit the logs in abundance ?.

I agree with the others about the possibility of rats/mice living in the wood, but how long were you planning to leave the logs there? All winter, or just for a little bit? I don't think it will hurt the chickens. We have multiple piles of firewood and when my chickens free range, they love investigating them. It hasn't hurt them at all, they'll even worm their way under the tarps to check out the firewood. I guess they're getting bugs. I just make sure the wood is stacked solid enough that it doesn't collapse and smash a chicken.

My birds love pecking at rotting logs. The bugs are a good source of protein. Mice also make for tasty chicken treats. Yes, they will poop all over the wood pile. A wood pile in the chicken run will not cause health problems.

OK, well that really answer my question. As my biggest concern was that the Logs are a bit damp and I had been told a while back that Chickens can get ill from wood if it has any kind of rot in it.

In an enclosed coop, mold is definitely a concern. In an outdoor environment, there is no worry. I live in a very damp climate, surrounded by woods. If rotting wood was such a serious problem, my whole flock would have died a long time ago.

Well, its not really enclosed. But it does have three sides closed off, see photo. I have my logs stacked up in the rear left corner under the house area. I am hopeful it will dry out and then be more useable.

That's a sweet little coop/run setup!
Are two of the sides covered in some kind of clear material?

What exactly are "cut log rings"?
What is your climate/location?

I doubt they would hurt the birds, other than taking up precious space....
.....where it looks like you keep feed/water?.

Tho there was a confirmed case of confirmed aspergillus blooming on fresh wood chips in a run that killed several birds,

I doubt a few logs would host that.

Haven for mice to live is another valid concern.
