This is an old coop that my grandparents had chickens in when I was a small child and I'll be 55 in December so this coop has been around a long time and was well built. I now live on the property and I build a house here in 2003 and the coop sets about 100 feet behind my house. The house had to have a new floor installed and new hardware cloth put on all the windows, I build an exterior nest box with three nest. This chicken house is made out of yellow polar and there is no nailing a nail into this lumber without first predrilling with a drill bit. I bent every nail I tried to nail into this lumber, so I finally just predrilled nail holes first when I didn't use screws.

The above pictures is before I installed the floor. I used three 4 x6's for the supports down the middle and then put down 1x6's for the flooring boards. The outside wall sill was still solid so I didn't have to replace those, I think they are large round locust post which should never rot and are still solid as the day they were laid down probably close to 70 plus year ago. The house is now finished and I have 8 barred rock hens and one roo that really seem to enjoy their new home. Plus 4 other chickens that was given to me by a friend. I build a run and covered the sides and top with hardware cloth. The little door you see in the first picture is the original little door that the chickens used when I was a child.

I build the poop door that slides up when pulled, the opening to the little door is the original opening that my grandparents chickens used. I remember opening and closing the little door with my grandmother when I was a child.

The above picture is before I installed the top on the run which is also hardware cloth. My barred rock chickens are now 24weeks old and are now laying. This project has been a labor of love that I will never forget as I done all the work by myself which from start to finish was well over a year. Ok the last pictures was taken with the gamecam that I installed near the coop to see what might visit the coop during the night and the only thing so far was a stray cat.

WHAT A WONDERFUL STORY.

You may have the oldest coop on record. I know there are many that have old coops, but may have been rebuilt many times like every 15 years. The lumber is a type that seems to last forever.
WISHING YOU MANY HAPPY YEARS USING THIS COOP.

Thanks cavemanrich: The lumber used in building this coop was milled from here on the property. Here are a couple of before pictures. I remember the coop had electrical power when I was a child. I'll be running electrical service to the coop.

The metal roof is the original.
