Hello, everyone!

We just purchased 3 pullet Bantam Cochins and 1 rooster from a lady about a week ago. I noticed the day we put them in the backyard one of the Pullets kept sneezing... after doing some research online and now the others have started sneezing as well Im affraid they have some type of Upper Respiratory Infection :(

The thing is, I plan on expanding my flock of chickens and want to buy more and also raise/sell chick however since I think these chickens are infected What is the right thing to do?? I am not wanting to sell or give these sick chickens away since they are considered carriers too

I have only noticed them sneezing, no other obvious signs I can detect from looking at them.

some help would be greatly apprectiated!

Would sneezing every 2-3 minutes be considered normal?

They are on grass right now in a large chicken run.

The person had about 30 of the chickens in a super small dog pen really muddy, and hardly any room for them to move... If that really matters or not. Just trying to give all the information :)

Mine often have little sneezing fits. Keep an eye on them before deciding.

Where are they sleeping? I've had pine shavings in the hen house and dusty straw in the nest box cause respitory problems like this.

That is funny that you just mentioned that! I was just thinking the same thing... we did put Pine shaving in their chicken coop... which they are not use to. The lady had no bedding on the bottom of their coop just thick layer of poop .

Maybe I should remove it and put something else??

As has been stated, sneezing can be okay.

If you see bubbly eyes, drippy beaks, wheezing, hunching, puffing, lethargy, or going off food and water, more action may be needed.

The only way to tell which respiratory illness you're dealing with (if it comes to that) is to get blood work done by a vet. Even if they don't treat chickens, they should be able to run a test for you.

I'd keep an eye on them and let them adjust to their new surroundings. :)

Welcome to BYC!!
