I have a 6 month old magpie duck and she's extremely lethargic. She's been this way for 3 or 4 days and I finally decided to take her to the vet but the vet closed. We called the number and talked to the vet and he said to keep her warm and give her gatoraid and separate her from the other birds. She's been throwing up water that's she drinks and she doesn't walk very well. She normally doesn't like to be held but she just lays in my arms drooling. She's drinking but she throws up and drools alot. Her sister is fine and so are the chickens. About a week ago we put shavings in the coop and left the bag full of shavings in there. The next morning I came out and the ducks made a hole in the bag and we're eating the shavings and the plastic! I took it out of there. Lastly bo hasn't been herself. Not running around or splashing in the water. Today she hardly moved. Her wings are dropping. I don't know when the last time she ate was either. She hasn't pooped in hours and when she did there was hardly any. I picked her up and I got a little drop of greenish clear on my arm. The vet said we can bring her in tomorrow morning if she's not doing any better.but I'm worried about her tonight. She just threw up so much water.

How does her crop feel? You say they ate shavings. She may have impacted crop.

I felt her crop and I couldn't feel a big lump or anything. It does smell a little funky. And her chest feathers are like ruffled in areas. Like her chest feathers aren't laying down like they used to

If it smells off then she has sour crop. She could also have an infection as the shavings cam damage the lining in their esophagus and crop. If she is throwing the water back up it is not going into her crop and being digested. I believe she has sour crop/impacted crop.

is there anything I can do for her tonight? No guarantee we can get her to the vet in the morning. We're going to a festival and have to leave early.hoping to drop her off with the vet.

The only thing you can do is to manually message the crop while holding her upside down forcing whatever it is, whether it be food or water, out through her mouth. Sometimes you can give water and Apple cider vinegar and it will help break up a blockage but not always. If she ate a big chunk of shavings it could be really stuck in there.

I would make sure 100% she makes it to the vet first thing in the morning. She is not going to make it much longer if she doesn't.

I read in The Ultimate Pet Duck Guidebook that a vet is needed . . . that apple cider vinegar in water might help a little, to be careful with crop massage. I think if you can keep her hydrated, that's going to be a big help till you can get her to the vet.

If you have probiotics you can add to the water that might also be something to consider trying.
