Ive been doing a lot of readings and read upon vent checking and checking wing feathers. How accurate are these methods? I have some Ayam Cemanis Im trying to name from A-Z but its kind of hard to not know gender. Feather checking looks easiest and which would mean of my 7 chicks they're all female? Vent checking I thought I had a male, but now Im starting to doubt what Im looking at when vent checking. Any help?

Feather sexing does not work on ayam cemanis or nearly any breed of chick. It works only on chicks that have been bred for that trait, which means nearly all chicks that can be sexed that way are cross breeds.

Vent sexing is tricky and you can kill the chick while doing it. Even experts can only do it with about 90% accuracy.

Oh. Why is it that most or all the readings Ive done did not mention that feather checking is only for certain breeds. Well guess Im glad vent checking is hard and only 90%. Was kinda devistated when I tried both methods and they both look like females. I can assume then that if there is any rooster I wasnt able to successfully vent check them.

Now is there a way of sexing the ayam cemanis at a younger age? And why is it that I have 3 quick featherers and a slow one? Does feather growth have anything to do with sex or just bird to bird?

What I have noticed is long bodies vs big bodies and quick feathering. They're 2/3 week old chicks, when can I start telling and what to look for?

My cemanis I can tell at about four weeks by their comb development. I haven't found that their feathering rate is linked to their gender, but in some breeds it seems to be. I've had light brahma breeders tell me their males feather in slower than their females, and for me when I was raising them that was also the case.

I guess Ill be keeping an eye out for that. And maybe see if there is any relation with the quick feather growth for mine. Now would the comb grow out significantly or just a little bit? I want to make sure what Im noticing or not noticing is what I should notice.

Females combs stay really short until right at POL... the males combs pop up considerably at around 4 to 6 weeks... you'll notice the difference for sure... :D

Heres todays pic if them at 3 weeks at least the oldest 2. The one with less feather is the oldest by 2 days.
