So I have my first chicken ailment and I'm not entirely sure what to do.

Here are some photos of my hen. Her eye appears swollen and she can only open it part way. It appears that there's discharge coming from it by the presence of the matted feathers below. Her other eye looks relatively normal if a bit red and doesn't appear to have any discharge. She seems kinda down in the dumps and just sits in the stance shown in the photo.

She is laying age but I'm not sure how old as I got her from someone back in May and she was laying when I got her. I'm guessing she's at least a year and a half old as she is molting.

I've separated her from the others and started her on the Rooster Booster vitamins, electrolytes and probiotics. What should I do for her?

Similar eye problem. I used neosporin a couple times per day in eyes. On e had a goat with eye infection. Vet said neosporin. It worked for each. Is hen refusing to drink or eat? May not be a year old yet. Hope she gets well soon. It helps to keep her in a quiet dark spot for a few days and boost immune system...garlic, plain yogurt and such.
 
It could be mycoplasma, coryza, or other infection. Does she sneeze, gasp, or have wheezing or rattling when she breathes? It would be good to see a vet or get her tested, but keep her isolated from others. Tylan 50 injectable 1 ml given orally twice a day for 5 days might help symptoms, but if there is E.coli or other bacteria that Tylan won't help, you would need something from a vet or even enrofloxacin. She needs to be kept warm, and given plenty of fluids.
 
I have not heard her sneeze. I just went out to listen to her while she's sleeping and I can't hear her wheezing or anything. She just sounds like a chicken breathing from what little I know about chickens.

She is drinking and eating but she's not eating much. She ate about 1/4 cup today.

Would it help to clean her eye with saline and start her on Tylan?

I spoke to a vet and it would be $150 just to walk in the door and have them look at her. Seems a bit high for a chicken. There is an avian vet around that will do necropsies for $25 but they won't see live birds :(

We have an 8 week old chick with the same, he is also not coughing or wheezing. We have isolated him in a cage on his own....bathing his eye with warm salt water & also putting denegard in his water just in case Mycoplasma is the cause. Lots of TLC is always good too!!
 
I have read that they will always carry Mycoplasma and pass it on to other new flock members. Is this the case?

Also, what is the Denagard dosage? I'm thinking I might start that.

If you're not seeing symptoms in other birds and only one eye is affected, I would guess you're looking at an eye infection. However, you should keep an eye on all your birds and monitor them closely for respiratory symptoms, just in case.

I've used Vetricyn to successfully treat eye infections several times in the past, however they often do require antibiotics to fully cure - Penicillin, which is available at many feed stores, would be a good option. I've always used Baytril in eye infections severe enough to warrant antibiotics, with very good results, but as it is banned in food animals, it can be hard to source.
