"How long does he have to live?"

"Not long, I'm afraid. Maybe only a day.

"We should get to work then, shouldn't we?"

A woman opened up a large suitcase and took out an extravagant and complicated machine, placing it on a table. A man impatiently waited for her to set everything up, and plugged the machine in once she had handed him the chord. They were wearing lab coats, both including name tags. The woman's name was Fleur Bossier and the man's name was Timothy Bowick.

There was a bed in the middle of a large room, and an old man was sleeping in it. Or, more accurately, in a coma. A doctor stood beside the bed, and the unconscious man's daughter nervously watched the scientists at work.

"What's his wish?" Timothy asked the daughter dully.
"Huh?" She said, confused and now noticing she had spaced out.

"What does the man want? You know, a dream of his that he never accomplished or something." Fleur explained as she took out some odd metal headsets.

"Oh...He wants to go to the moon." The daughter told them, "I asked him why, but he never told me. He's wanted to ever since River died-"

"Alright, that's all we need to know." Timothy interrupted gruffly. "This old man's dying, we can't waste time telling stories."

Fleur sighed at Timothy's rudeness but didn't say anything. She handed Timothy a headset and put another one on herself.
"Put that thing on William." She said.
"Who??" Timothy asked with a raised eyebrow.
"The old man, you jerk. We've had this appointment for weeks and you can't even remember William's name?"
"Okay, bossy."

Timothy carefully put the odd headset on William, having some difficulty with how limp he was, and went back to Fleur to put one on himself as well.

With the machine working, the headsets on, and only around 20 hours to make the old man think he actually went to the moon, the scientists sat down in their chairs and pressed a green button on a remote Fleur was holding. They suddenly fell asleep and entered the old man's mind.

They both woke up in the same room, but nobody was in it. No doctor, the daughter was gone, this was one of the man's memories.

"Well, if this is one of his memories, then where the heck is the guy?" Timothy muttered, and then said "Oh." as William walked in, carrying his guitar. But William jumped back in surprise as he spotted Timothy.

"Make yourself invisible, blockhead!" Fleur told Timothy, kicking his shin. Timothy cursed and quickly did as he was told.
"Sorry, forgot." He quickly told her to avoid getting hit again. William shook his head and decided that he didn't actually see anything.

He set his guitar down and walked back out of the room, "River! I can finally teach you how to play the guitar, like you wanted to yesterday!" He said hopefully. He went back into the room and waited patiently with his guitar. After a few minutes, a woman with hazel eyes and long blonde hair slowly walked in. She was holding an origami rabbit.

William looked to River, confused. "River, why are you holding a rabbit?" He asked. River took a few moments to reply.
"...I made it."
"River, you've been making those for days now. I just threw out nearly twenty of them earlier this week. I don't understand." He said and sighed, before waiting for her to reply. It took her nearly a minute.
"River, I-"
"I like them."
William sighed again, and River looked to the floor.
"River, why are you like this? You've always been off, honestly. Even before we were married."

"Well, this is awkward..." Timothy muttered. "Maybe if we just speed this memory up..." He rolled up his sleeve and looked at a large watch, but instead of a clock there were buttons, nearly a hundred. Fleur looked alarmed.

"Timothy, where did you get that??' She asked, "Isn't that mine? You're my assistant, you're not supposed to have that."
"You left it." Timothy said simply, "I decided I'd keep track of it for you."
"Timothy, that's dangerous, don't you dare press any buttons!"

Too late. Timothy had pressed one of the buttons, guessing that it'd speed up the memory, but instead River fell to the floor, apparently dead. William gasped, "River!!"

"Timothy, what did you do?!"
"I had no idea you could KILL people in memories. Why would you need to do that??" Timothy said defensively.
"You didn't actually kill her, but now William thinks his wife is dead! You've killed his memory of his wife!" Fleur shouted. "Give me the watch!"

"Okay, okay, jeez!" Timothy scrambled to get the watch off of his wrist, but suddenly the area around them disappeared for a few moments. It continued to do so every 5 seconds.

"The machine's messing up." Fleur muttered. "Wake up right now!"
"You're getting out too, right? That suspiciously sounds like you're not going to wake up." Timothy said with a raised eyebrow.
"I said wake up! I'm not leaving, because I need to fix his memory."
"But won't you die or something like that if you stay here and the machine crashes?" He questioned.
"Stop asking questions and leave! But yes, that will happen. But still, wake yourself up!"
"Don't try to play the hero. We can both leave and abandon this guy's memory, if it's for our own safety."

There was a loud metallic noise drawing nearer, and Fleur knew that they only had a few moments to escape. She took her watch, and hovered her thumb over one of the buttons.
"You want to stay here? Fine. I shouldn't have helped you cheat through training." Fleur said with a slight snarl and pressed the button. She disappeared, and everything around Timothy turned pitch black.

Fleur woke up, and scrambled to get out of her seat. The machine had broke, and William's daughter rushed to her side.
"What happened??" She asked urgently, and Fleur looked to Timothy miserably as she noticed he wasn't waking up.
"The machine...It broke. It didn't seem quite right when I started it up, but I didn't think the whole system would crash." Fleur replied miserably.
"But...My Father. Did you change the memory? Was it successful, did you take him to the moon?"
Fleur had a difficult time answering that. No, she didn't. She killed the memories of his wife, and left. But one, she could get sued if she told her, and two, she wasn't a fan of letting people down.
"...Yeah. Yes, it worked completely. Your old man believes that he actually managed to go to the moon." Fleur lied, looking like she was definitely telling the truth. Then she looked to Timothy, who was still sitting in his chair, unconscious.

"What's wrong with him? Why hasn't he woken up?" The daughter asked, concerned.
"He didn't leave in time. He's stuck in the old man's mind, and given the fact that the machine completely crashed on us he'll be able to see nothing." Fleur paused for a few moments before saying, "I have to kill him."
"What? Here? No, you can't do that!" She said, now very alarmed as she noticed that Fleur was carrying a gun.
"Either he'll sit there until he starves to death, unable to escape or see much of anything, or I put him out of his misery." Fleur cocked her gun.
The doctor decided to step in.
"Ma'am, you cannot do that! This is a professional setting, a man is dying right now!"

There was a loud bang and everyone fell silent as Fleur lowered her gun and put it on safety again.
"Where's your telephone?...I need to make a call."

A week later Fleur sat at her desk, finishing up some paperwork. Her phone rang, and she reluctantly answered.
"Hello?"
"Ms. Bossier, this is going to be a tough nut to crack."
"What do you mean? Nobody has any appointments with me right now."
"This is urgent. There's a man, he claims that he served as a Nazi many years ago. He saw too many people suffer and die, so he managed to escape. All these years, he's lived in the middle of nowhere, no civilization. Instead of being a murderer, he wants to be a hero, Fleur."
There were a few moments of silence.
"How is that going to be any more difficult than any other old loon?"
"Fleur...He's 100 years old."
"100? Exactly?"
"Yep. Just turned 100. Given the fact that he used to be a Nazi, he spent his birthday in prison, but we managed to get him out. Legally, of course. But that's 100 years of memories to go through, and I'm sure some of it is very complicated."
"So, what kind of hero does he want to be? Because you know that we don't change people's memories to make them think they're magic."
"Don't worry, it's nothing that childish...He wants to be President."
Fleur groaned at that, this was going to be one of the most complicated things she's ever done. "President, are you serious?? He's a German! What German would want to be President of the United States??"
"What man would want to go to the moon, but instead have his wife killed in his memories?"
Fleur went wide-eyed. "How'd you know about that?"
"Fleur, you were only in William's memories for less than an hour. And, Timothy ended up dying. One can only assume..."
Fleur stayed silent.
"I know what you did. If you do this, you'll be rich. If you don't...You better prepare to lose your money, your job, and your popularity. I emailed you the location, there are going to be multiple scientists helping you. Be there by 5:00."
He hung up and Fleur set the phone down. She didn't want to do this, but she was basically being forced to. And maybe with other scientists it wouldn't be so hard. But with 100 years of memories to go through, it would be like living in a memory.

(Summary: There's a type of scientist that knows how to enter the human mind and change memories, making the dying person think that they really accomplished all of their dreams. It's a difficult and extremely dangerous job, but is worth it...Usually.
Fleur Bossier just failed to make one of her clients believe he went to the moon, instead she erased his memories of his wife, and so if anyone found out she could be sued for all she's worth and lose her job along with her license.
She's going to be paid a lot of money to make a former Nazi believe that he was President of the United States, but she has 100 years of memories to go through and change. Unwilling but forced to change this man's life, she'll only have the help of her abilities and a few other scientists that will also be entering his memories with her.
Sometimes this job can push you past the limit, and definitely knows how to create some liars. Many are questioning now, is it worth it?)
