Just curious as to how others deal with freezing temps and the water? My coop is about 200 feet away from my house. We have no electric or running water out that far. Need some ideas!!!

I use black rubber bowls to water in the winter. If you set those in the sun they will keep water thawed in some pretty chilly weather. In mornings (since the sun does not shine at night) and on days the sun does not shine I beat the ice out of them by bashing them on the ground before refilling. Since they are rubber they don’t break. I get the black rubber bowls at Tractor Supply.

In summer I use white bowls in the shade to try to keep the water cooler.

You could use a power converter and car battery for heater. Might need charged every so often but hey whatever it takes. Could also put in solar heater.

Right now I'm using 3 5 gallon buckets with the nipples on the bottom as their water thing. Luckily, they are in the sun for a few hours.

Before I ran electric out out my coop, I built a $5 cookie tin water fount heater, and used two 100' extension cords, hooked together, to run power to it. I did this for two yrs, with no problems.

I use the same.... (Minus your summertime switch) :D

I have busted most kinds of waterers.... But not those rubber pans.

I LOVE the black rubber pans. If you stick them behind a plastic sheet or a window that keeps them out of the wind and keeps them thawed for WAY longer.

I know people that like them.... But I have busted so many things..

And I also have the brain of a stump..... So I like "pan...has liquid water....good" anything else and I would either break it...or kill my birds because I thought they had water when they didn't.

My neighbor takes water out twice daily, and uses the black rubber pans, and does fine. I have electricity out there, and the metal heaters under the metal waterers, and don't have to worry about it. Here in Michigan, it's too cold too long for me to use anything else! Mary
