Clostridium perfringens I think- bird is wasting away

I have a 3 year old girl who I think has CP. The pictures on the poop chart look just like hers. I have had her in the house for a few days and have been giving her Tetracycline H 10 in her water.

She is very very thin. She does not drink, so I add some of the medicated water to her food. She hardly eats. I have had to force her to eat some "healthy bread" soaked in the medicated water mixed with egg or yogurt and a bit of wet crumbles, sometimes a bit of honey or electrolytes. I may get 1/4 slice of bread down her each day. She eats very little and will pick at some things, but typically will not eat the same thing again the next day. I have never forced feed them with a tube, but have one.

I do have tylan 50, but I just realized it is 1 year out of date. I could give it to her orally on a piece of bread. because she is really getting very little of the terra-Vet 10.

But my question is, she is very gassy and her runny poops smell bad, so I think gasses are building up in her crop, should I keep forcing her to eat? Should I tube feed her? Is their something better to feed her? maybe just straight yogurt?

Sometimes I get a little egg in her. But she is wasting away. I may have caught this too late.

Tylan can treat some types of enteritis, but a stool sample tested by a vet would be a good thing to try and identify that, or something else. You would need to ask for a gram stain along with a fecal float for coccidia and worms. I would use the outdated Tylan if that is all you have. Since many other things can cause wasting, I would try a vet. Crop problems can complicate any illness. Make sure it is emptying overnight, and not puffy or hard. I wish I could offer more help, but many times we don't know what the problem is until a necropsy is done after a death. Your state vet would be good for that.

Thank you for the reply. I am going to try to see a vet. My vet does not see chickens so I may try one that I drive past every day. But I really believe it is CP. Her crop does empty but not always fully and it is sometimes puffy. Undigested food bits are in the poop. She is very gassy when she goes and smelly. She is on the bottom of the pecking order.

But I guess my biggest question is, should I keep force feeding her or tube feed her, to get some nutrition in or do I let he go easy on the food and try to fight the crop "imbalance" first.

Many antibiotics can treat enteritis, if that is what she has. Coccidosis previously can be a precursor to enteritis. The vet can test for those, and also look at crop problems. Maybe they could use a broad spectrum antibiotic to treat both possible problems, and I hope you can get some advice on how to proceed. Tube feeding can help if the intestines and GI tract are healthy enough to absorb food, but if she has enteritis, her intestines may not be working properly. Damage that has already occurred could be a factor in your chicken's recovery, but I hope that you can help her.

Best to have a vet look at her.
