My rooster was attacked by a dog 4 days ago. The next day after his attack I noticed him gurgling and now he is coughing. I clean his wound everyday and today I started giving him penicillin. What to do.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

I am sorry you are having trouble. Unfortunately he may have internal injuries that you can't see or treat. Is there any way you can take him to a vet, preferably avian? Cost for the visit is $45 for me.

I would also offer some scrambled egg for the extra protein and maybe an electrolyte solution to help with energy for recovering. If you don't have something like sav-a-chick, rooster booster, or nutridtench, you can use pedialyte. Or recipe is 2 cups warm water, 1/2 teaspoon each baking sod and salt, and 2 tablespoons brown sugar. Can substitute white sugar or molasses. Give full strength. You can add some Poly Vi Sol with NO iron baby vitamins if you have it. And probiotics like those found in yogurt might also be helpful to aid recovery.

What are you cleaning the wound with? Is he separated from the rest of the flock? Anyone picking at his wounds?

Wish I could be more help.

Good luck!

Thank you for joining us at Backyard chickens. Have you checked the bird top to bottom (under feathers) to see if he has any puncture wounds.?If he is gurgling and coughing he might have punctures at throat or lungs
