When do they turn 'Cuckoo'? I know they don't get the full cuckoo look until a certain age. Mine started out almost all black, and while over the last 12 weeks she has developed white spots, spots are all they are and it doesn't look as if they are becoming much more (think: Dalmatian, but in reverse).

So at what age should I expect her to start looking like a cuckoo?

Barred birds, Cuckoo or otherwise, will appear Barred from the time they begin to feather. Even the more muddled, darker Cuckoo types should have several black and white bars across each feather from a young age. Are you sure she is a Cuckoo Marans?

She better be! That's what I ordered, what I paid for and that's what they say was sent to me. Her featheres are 'barred', somewhat (look closely at the full sized photo).

It's not super important to me if she ends up looking like a regular cuckoo or not, I was just wondering if she was going to go through an extensive change of appearance or if I can expect this to be her final coloring before I name her.

Like I mentioned before, she is just over 12 weeks old.

That does appear to be a Cuckoo Marans, albeit a bit dark. I doubt she will change much as she matures. It's likely just a result of her being hatchery quality. Hatcheries are lazy and care about quantity over quality.

I wouldn't call her too dark. The golden cuckoos that I breed, are darker, but I select for that. Occasionally I'll get 'plain' cuckoos that don't show gold.
