I have 5 Ameraucana's and only one is laying! I bought them in the end of July when the were a year and a half. The one just started laying the first of October. I have tried Apple cider vinegar in there water but didn't see any results! My 5 Rhode Island Reds are laying! Are Ameraucana's a good breed for laying? Any thoughts?

So when you first bought them they were probably stressed from the move and stopped laying. Then they probably molted in the fall, which also stopped them from laying. And now the daylight hours may be low enough that now they are not laying because of that. Your other birds may be from this spring, and new pullets tend to lay through the winter. Older birds don't always.

Ok! When i got the ameraucana's they had a little spot on there backs by there tail that had no feathers on it, though it looked like the feathers were coming back! So does that mean that when i got them they were just getting over molting?

When i got my 10 Chickens they were currently free ranged. I can't free range my chickens because my dogs will eat them, and my family doesn't want them out! Once in awhile i let them out when the dogs are tied up and they love being out! The Ameraucana's didn't really want to go out, but the Rhode Island reds loved being out! When i bought my chickens i asked the lady if it was going to be a problem for them to be in a fenced in area when they were currently free ranged and she said they would be fine. Maybe that effected them laying?

So when we put our clocks back tomorrow Will that effect them?

No because they will still be getting the same amount of daylight.

The missing feathers on the back could have been molting or could have been rooster damage.

Ok! I'm pretty sure they had a rooster there. The lady i bought my chickens from she raises chicks and sells them so what she does when they young is she clips there beaks so they can't peck at each other! I'm glad she clipped them because my RIRs peck at the Ameraucana's.

That's not good. Debeaking is a cruel procedure that should never be necessary. The only reason it's done is because people and factory farms want to jam chickens into spaces too small, which they will not tolerate, so they cut their beaks so that they cannot fight each other for space or start mutilating each other out of stress.

How much space do your birds have? Excessive pecking is a sign of cramped quarters.

Oh i did not know that! know i feel sorry for them! They only peck at them when there eating food or eating some treats on the ground! When there trying to get something that the RIR are eating that's usually when they peck at them! They have a lot of space to run in. They don't have a factory though!

I have a question. What do you do in the winter for your chickens? This is going to be the first winter for me to have chickens. What kind of heating do you use for them?
