It has been my experience that the first egg laid is usually not fertile even though the hen has been bred.

There are a number of different ways to store fresh eggs for incubation. I store mine in a jumbo egg carton with one end propped up on a box in an attempt to achieve a 45° angle. I try to switch which end of the carton is high at least 3 times daily. I store my eggs in my basement around 60°F for up to 14 days.

It is recommended to store at around 60% humidity and for no longer than 7 - 10 days before beginning incubation.

If you are new to incubating, read Hatching Eggs 101 by Sally Sunshine. It contains everything need to know about incubating from storing eggs to everything else.
