hello!
I have 5 heritage turkeys that i will be breeding this winter and am about to start giving them their higher protein feed. Last year i didn't give them any extra calcium, but the shells were still very difficult for the poults to break out from. What is the lowest percentage of calcium can the feed have so i can get the shells as thin as possible for the best hatch rate in my poults.

Thanks for asking, frizzlelove83!

The calcium requirement for laying turkeys is 2.25%. Be sure that you are feeding the hens an appropriate diet so that they can get the proper nutrition into the egg. This will provide the developing embryo to be as strong as possible when it comes time to hatch. Also, if you are incubating the eggs, make sure that the conditions are kept at ideal settings throughout the entire incubation period. This helps to ensure that the poults are strong enough to break out of the egg when it comes time to hatch.
