December hatch-along - Page 31

The hatching has begun on day 20. All 5 have piped and the first hatched out from a pip to a chick within hours. It was so fast and awesome because everyone was home to see it.

Sounds like a good idea, good luck with the pips!

All of my chicks have hatched. The last was around 7:30 this morning. How long should I leave them in the incubator before moving them to the brooder? Can I offer food and water right away? Thanks.

Untill their dry i like to let them get their feet under them so they dont fall head first in the water bowl. 24 hrs is not uncommon. Good luck!!

5/5 on my first hatch in my homemade incubator!  I used eggs from my own chickens. The black one and orange one are RIR and Olive Egger (Marans/Amerucana X), the 2 chipmunks are RIR and Cream Legbar crosses and the one with the white dot is a RIR and Dominique cross. This was a really fun experience. It's tempting to toss a few more eggs in the incubator and start a new batch. My husband, who was never very excited about the idea of more chickens, was so in awe when he watched 2 hatch out, that he even gave me his blessing to hatch more. lol. And the kids LOVED it. These are my first barnyard mixes and I look forward to seeing how they feather out. I am hoping for some crested heads and fluffy cheeks. The orange one has feathered legs.
