PSA - My hen died from eating crumbles

I have never seen all flock or starter or grower in a pellet form..
I started mine back on Nature Best crumbles and they hate it. Make such a mess. I did so again cause I have a roo and quite a few non layers ...matter fact only one is laying now ..
just a saying thanks yall

I have never heard/read of chickens choking too death on their feed. If anything I would expect it would be Cornish x. I wonder if they are fed smaller amounts 2 or 3 x a day, they wouldn't be so ravenous. I used to raise dogs and they ate like pigs but, thankfully none of them ever choked on it or got bloat. I did feed grown dogs twice a day (at vet's suggestion) so they would feel empty for so long.

Thank you for sharing this PSA. I fed crumbles for the first time today & they sounded like they were choking! Can you please watch the video & let me know if it sounded like that? I'm so scared it's a terribly contagious disease. Thank you!

Hi, welcome to BYC!

That seems like a sneeze to me, especially the way she is holding her beak open waiting for the next one to come that she can feel building... but I don't know if I ever heard a chicken cough.

Sometimes a sneeze is an indicator other times a sneeze is just a sneeze. Knowing YOUR flock can help you determine that. My guess is it was the (grain) dust in the crumbles up her nose.

Seemed more like a sneeze to me as well. Keep an eye on that one if you are worried she might be sick, though in case other symptoms present... Best Wishes!

I am sorry to hear about your hen, but I thank you for sharing your experience.

I was just wondering about this the other morning. I usually feed my chickens the pellets but when I had a family member pick up their feed for me, they accidentally bought the crumbles.

I used it, since I didn't feel like bringing it back to the store, but since I've been feeding it I have noticed my hens are seeming to "choke" on it. It looks like they eat it too quickly and they have to take a moment to sit there with their mouths open to breath. It definitely scared me when I saw it happen.

The bag is just about empty but I will definitly only use the pellets from now on. I do however give them cracked corn as well but I haven't noticed any oddities when feeding them that.
