Hi fellow farmers! We had a dog attack a little over a week ago. They got 2 of my 3 silkie roosters. My last one I thought was fine. He held himself up under the barn for several days. Bruce Wayne (Batman for short) lost feathers but I never saw blood. When I finally crawled under the barn to fetch him he was dehydrated and basically flopped into my hands. I was able to relieve his pasty butt rather easily. He's taken in sugar water and seems to be getting some bearings back. He did apparently get a small bite but it had scabbed over and looks not infected but I've still dressed it with Neosporin. Any suggestions on his care? He's currently living in my bedroom in a pet carrier. Bowels seem to be working and he coos when he's rubbed but no crows or otherwise. I'm sad and worried. First time posting for help and new backyard farmer. Thanks in advance!

Make sure he has accesses to food at all times. You can get him started on vitamins such as Sav-A-Chick,Rooster Booster. There is Healing sprays for chickens. He is probably acting worse because of the trauma he just went through. Also welcome to BYC

I agree. Give him some chopped egg, canned tuna, and a little chicken feed mixed with water. He probably was scared and in shock, then became dehydrated and hungry, then weak. Give him some TLC, and make sure that dogs can't get to them. Let us know how he gets along.

So Batman is still only eating when I prompt him to with no crowing. He's getting lots of love. Thankfully I had rooster booster on hand. He's at least having more reaction to my feeding him, which seems to translate in him gaining strength. Thanks for the encouragement, it sure helps!

This morning seems like steps backwards. I woke up to Batman laying on his side, I thought he was gone. But moved and cooed when I touched him. I've clean out his cage. Fresh sugar water, fresh corn on cob, little wedge of cucumber, feed with little salmon and molasses... I have also brought him in a dust bath box to sooth him. He almost seems top heavy. Any new suggestions? Oh and he's getting rooster booster every day and night.

You may want to search at the top of this page for "Go team tube feeding," a good thread by Casportpony on tube feeding sick chickens. That might sustane him as he recovers from his injuries. It sounds like he either has suffered a serious head or internal injury, or isn't drinking and earing enough. I really hope he recovers.
