Any advice please on caring for hens in winter when working full time?

Glad you made it!

My friends cat was always super friendly when I would come over to feed while he was out of town. She would even come in from outdoors when I would do his usual whistle to let her know I was there.

Silly how dogs and cats both often wait until we show up before they eat. Both his dog and cat would come in through the doggie door and eat while I was there even though their bowls were full all day!

Since I am an animal person, I would always hang out for a couple hours and make sure to do playing and loving. They liked the company.

And I've had several dogs that would eat at our dinner time when we sit down to eat.

Do your cats come indoors with you?

Weird how the days are getting longer, but the sun is still coming up later int he morning. Mine are getting out around 7:45 now.

Thanks lovely.

Aaaww you sound like me - a real, soppy animal person ha ha.

Yes, all the cats generally sleep on my bed with me at night, or at least in my room if I'm too restless - that time of life ha ha. They even sit on my knee when in the bathroom ha ha. I had to shoo one back home yesterday as she was following me up the street when I was walking to the shop tee hee.

I have Lypsy (4) who is the mum and her babies who are 3: Eddie, Marley and Jagger.

I hate these dark mornings - seeing the 6 ladies pile from the coop but not be able to see their breakfast is so sad. Will get home before dark tomorrow so have made them a lovely supper-full of protein to help with their moult.

Enjoy the rest of your day or Evening ha ha. It's just after 9pm here.

Well my lovely people, now I am out of the dark place in my head, the dark mornings and nights are not so bad. With my trusty torch I scoop poop in the morning, remove broody silkies to the broody pen and put out feed and water. Every night I clean additional poop, wash and replenish feeders and water etc ready for the morning and keep in the kitchen. Am not really a morning person so it is better for me to do all the work in the evening ha ha.
Several times a week I ensure that I leave work whilst I still have at least an hour of light at least to clean runs and give my babies a couple of treats and catch up on chicken chat ha ha ha. Weekends I love as I can spend more time with them and give the coop a good clean.
I guess this first winter, especially with the avian flu in the UK has been a huge learning curve for a first time chicken keeper-next year I will be a lot more confident.
Thanks for all your lovely and helpful advice. I love this site x
