Well I can't be posting for a hatch a long for what has been the most successful hen of the season, because I was walking through the yard with someone, who pointed and referred to a hen who was sitting on eggs, and when I look, I see a half shell. I pick up the shell and it's an obvious hatch and so I look under the hen (who doesn't mind me) and she has 4.

So I didn't know about her plans until she had hatched 'em. She has 10 now, about less than a week old. All whites and yellows. She beat the hen who sat on one of those mountains of eggs 24 or so I think, that you never find, and hatched 8 black ones out (white hen and where did she find a black rooster?)

"Speckled Beaters" hmmm. Sadly, most of my chickens only get one name - and a few I can't tell apart are just the "Littles" even though some of them are much bigger than the "Big girls" - it's all as logical as chicken math.

A great bunch of laying hens - rocks, 'lorpes, orps, EEs, etc, plus our newest grow-outs: Bieles, BCM, CLs,
SRBs, 55s and a brooder full of darling d'Uccles! Oh yeah, there are the humans too!! Awesome adult twin boys, lovely teenaged daughter, and patient husband! Ephesians 4: 32

Thanks :-) I didn't expect much from this hatch. It's the first time I have tried to hatch any eggs from that pen. I haven't seen them breeding lately, but you never know, so I thought I would try hatching a few. I haven't noticed any fertile eggs in my frying pan lately, but I haven't really been looking for them. I did notice my Silver Laced Orpingtons breeding the other day tho.

If I don't see any fertile JO eggs in the spring, I will throw in my back-up JO rooster to see if he can help. Right now I think it's just too cold and not enough daylight hours.

Does anyone have any idea of how to get my chickens in the mood for breeding? Heat lamps? Candle light dinners? I want them to breed so I can have fertile eggs for a Valentine's Day hatch.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder....Set up a little pen for him where the hens can see him and keep them separate from them for a week. Then let him in with the girls. He should start breeding them within a couple of weeks. If not, then separate for a couple of days and then back in for a couple of days until the eggs go fertile.
