Hello all!

Oh the feather thing and him being a jerk are two separate situations. I can understand that he's gonna pull of some feathers. I just wasn't sure how to help protect the hens....
He's a jerk to me... I'm not afraid of him but I don't trust him. He really is a huge bird. Used to have to push him away with a yard stick to keep distance. It's like the whole "come at me bro" attitude

To help protect the hens from a roosters "affections", you can use a chicken saddle (sometimes called an apron) for them. Here's a picture of one:

If you look them up using the Search box at the top left corner of the screen, you might be able to find someone that makes them or a pattern so you could make one yourself.

Welcome!

I hope you enjoy BYC; not only is it overflowing with lots of useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures about chickens, turkeys, duck, quail, Peas and pretty much any other feathered and non feathered friends

Thank you all for the welcome! I was able to acquire a few aprons thru a mutual friend of mine and also convinced my mother to help me sew some. Have some extremely cold weather headed my way so adding additional insulation to the coop is priority. I do have plans to expand at some point so the next quest will be introducing new birds to the flock.... Until then all advice is welcome!

Hello there, and welcome to the wonderful world of Backyard Chickens! I hope you will make yourself at home here and enjoy it as much as I have! :frow
