Just curious if anyone has ever used something similar to a doggie door on their coop for the winter? Last winter had an issue with snow blowing into the coop (the chicken door isnt even that big), and I was wondering if anyone ever used a doggy door type flap to prevent that while still allowing the chickens to go in/out?

Bailey, the porky Yorkie (mix). I wanted to put a pine air freshener on her for Halloween, porcupine!!!!

I dont know if they would figure out the flap myself, that is what I am wondering. As long as straw is laid down or the run is covered, I think they would be fine re: the snow!

covered run (the white stuff inside is some shredded paper)

And if the flap is a problem, maybe a vertically divided flap, I bet a nickel they would figure that out...

Yeah I was wondering if they'd be able to figure it out, too. Maybe I'll just leave them in on those windy days. They have a pretty big coop and run, so covering the run wouldn't be an option for me, especially because this is the last winter I'll have them ( have to find them new homes in spring when I go to university.

Half of mine still go out when theres snow, others just sit in the door and pout.

lol it took mine three days to venture out in the snow...boy were they miffed when they first saw it, pouting would be a good description. Then eventually they all wandered out of the run and sat in trees or ran around in the snow. They are figuring it out!

Other issue of course with dog door would be ventilaiton in the coop if they elected to stay inside...which actually mine are not...they are outside all day. That being said, there is virtually no wind here all winter and coop/run area further protected from wind. It is almost, I am starting to believe, not about temperatures at ALL. It is about ventilation, wind protection, feeding for metabolism and options for hanging out!

So sorry to hear you might have to give them up next year!
