My son has been attempting to raise Dutch in 4-H and FFA for about 5 years. He is making progress with his birds, but as you know it takes TIME. He has been focusing only on cream light brown, but has recently acquired a pair of silver and a pair of buff columbian. He shows in a very small county in Oregon, but did come out with both best bantam in show and best bird in show. I am wondering if he is doing right by the breeding and should continue or what changes he should be making? I know this is only one picture, but please comment on what you see, both good and bad, in this bird. His hens are better than his cocks, but he is making strides in improving. Unfortunately, the cocks are always molting during his August fair. Ha! This is my first post here so perhaps the picture won't even be good?

Have you looked into joining the Dutch club? :) many breeders would gladly help a young youth with his stock, and you may find a local experience breeder that way that can handle and feel the birds.

From what I see she looks pretty good, but appears relaxed so it hard to judge over all.

Thanks! Does the Dutch club have a website? He is pretty serious about improving his flock. Thinking about taking a few birds to the National ABA show in Feb, not because he thinks he can win anything, but rather to get an honest opinion from outside our little area.

Well they did but it appeared to of gone dormant :/ reccomend then heading to FB then!

That is a brilliant idea, both you and him could also meet other breeders and make contacts for the future. Many breeders if they see a willing youth will happily help if they can :D

I know Dutch are very popular too so that will both be a curse and a blessing, the blessing being finding good stock to help his flock won't be hard the curse being that there is a chance he could get discouraged. Thankfully he doesn't sound like the type to do so and see that as a challenge ;)
