Well it looks like the good folks here at BYC were right despite my naiive hope that all would be ok.

I got these chooks as hatchlings from a kindergarten program.

Somehow I always had my suspicions about the black one being a cockerel.

Anyway as they grew the white one (Doris) started to develop much faster than Loretta especially around the comb.

Oh well I thought. Different breeds grow at different rates even though several people here already called it that the white one was a cockerel.

Anyway in the last few weeks Doris really developed "her" wattle and comb and also REALLY started to bulk up. Not just in size but also in weight. I had both of them on my lap yesterday and Doris / Boris weighs about double that of Loretta.

Then this morning I went out to the backyard and found Boris had become sexually active. Let's just say I don't think Loretta quite enjoyed the experience as much as Boris.

Now I guess I'll have some tough decisions to make.
Woe is me...

No. Just a normal suburban block and even if Doris / Boris could be stopped from crowing, I just don't have the room for a "harem" of hens.

Unexpected males happen quite often. He is a handsome guy though and if he's "people friendly", you could probably find him a home. Good luck!

He is a lovely boy. He loves being held (once you manage to catch him that is!)

Luckily he doesn't crow at full capacity yet. And he only seems to crow while in the chicken coop before he's let out.
