Foster rats

Even if you have them trained most rats don't exclusively use the litter box (some do I'm sure, mine never got completely on board). But it does help as they do seem to use it more often than not, so it just kind of gets the poop all in one location for easier cleaning. And yes, training is as simple as putting their poop or other soiled bedding in the litter box. Rats like being clean so they don't want to live in a dirty cage either.

My boys did pee everywhere though, usually from the highest ledge in the cage. Since having the litter box under there caused splatter sometimes (if they aimed just right), I just relied on the fleece to absorb it instead.

It doesn't make it easy that intact males scent mark too. Luckily my boy is fixed so scent marking isn't really something he cares about anymore but finding a vet who can fix male rats can be hard. My vet only fixed my male rat because he had a tumor in one of his testicles that was causing him to overproduce testosterone and made him super aggressive. After getting fixed he became so sweet and super shy.

The unfortunate situation and hard fact of having rats, they don't live horribly long. My 4 year old boy Ryker just had a stroke today and is in poor shape. Now we have to wait for the vets office to open tomorrow so we can have him put down. Not a very merry Christmas for me.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that :-( I do know they have short lives which stinks because it seems they make such nice pets!

There was no need to take him to the vet. Shortly after I left to visit my dad's family for Christmas he passed in my mom's arms. She said she told him he had been a good boy and that we all loved him and that he had a good life and he took his last breath and just passed. I am really just so happy he isn't suffering anymore since after his stroke he couldn't even walk. I'm happy it was fast and didn't take until tomorrow when we could get him in to the vet.

Very sorry to hear about Ryker, and it is unfortunate that rats live such short lives. It's why I haven't gotten more, I need time between each set to convince myself to do it again.

I did have one of my previous boys fixed due to aggression, he was always a little shy with people and not aggressive towards us, but he bit one of his brothers hard enough that he needed stitches (he ripped open his scrotum!) and so fixing him did help with that. The vet bills these guys accumulated was worse than a dog's, not many vets will work on rodents.

Yeah Ryker tried to neuter his brother too and he nipped at people and drew blood once. His original owner gave him to me because she had to keep him in a separate cage and he was starting to turn on people. After getting fixed he calmed way down and was able to end up living with my girls. He was always very friendly with them and looked out for them. His sisters are all missing him greatly right now. I'm happy my vet and I figured it out so he didn't have to live his life alone.
