Advice PLEASE! Why is this taking so long!?!?

Hi everyone, about two weeks ago I lost my little silkie Roo unexpectedly. I saw him hunched over and not being himself, but he always struggled in the winter, so I didn't think anything of it, but then I noticed his crop was HUGE and it wasn't going down and he wasn't pooping. I know that sounds like sour crop and or impacted crop, BUT I did once have Mareks disease (verified by state lab testing), so when the Roo past away I had him sent out too because I wanted to know if it was another case of Mareks. Previous to his death I hadn't lost any chickens in over a year.

Last time when it was Mareks the lab tests were back in a week, this time it has been two weeks! I'm going crazy! Why is it taking so long? My vet did call and ask, and the lab said they needed additional tests done and they had to send my chicken to a different lab. What the heck!? I'm starting to get really scared that it's taking so long because it's something very serious, and I'm afraid if it's something like avian flu they will come take all my chickens and kill them all. My little flock means so much to me and my daughter. They are our pets, and we love them so much. I did read that with the avian flu not all chickens die from it, and not all show signs of respiratory issues. I did have some sneezers here and there, but I've always been able to cure them of it with probiotics and vitamins. Can anyone please tell me if its normal for a necropsy to take two weeks or longer? Am I right to be scared someone will come kill them if it's something really bad?!?

I think when I had a necropsy done last it took about three weeks to get results back. That was a few years ago.

Avian influenza is not something you will get in your flock and not notice. It kills the vast majority of birds infected and the remaining ones will be in very poor shape. It's just not possible to have it and not know.

Marek's doesn't cause crop issues, and you won't see a crop swelling and refusing to go down unless crop issues are present. The symptoms you describe are classic sour/impacted crop.

Was your bird sent to the lab in Madison? If so they may have transferred it to Barron. I think Barron stopped doing necropsies for a while but are now back in business....they were always the 'go to' lab for poultry necropsies.
It takes time to incubate/grow samples so we have no choice but to be patient.

Thank you for the replies, it did help ease my mind until I finally did get the results late today. My little rooster died from pneumonia. His lungs had a lot of fluid in them. I am glad to know it wasn't anything that is highly contagious and deadly like Mareks or avian flu. I had no idea.. I didn't even see him sneeze or get bubbly eyes or anything. I sure will miss him, I'll post a picture here in his honor. He was a little sweetheart and head of his flock, even with 4 other roosters!
