New chicken owners!

Thread Starter
We are moving to a farm and are planning to own chickens for pets and egg laying only. We are at the research phase right now. We have a 5 yo son and a 7 yo daughter. We're not so concerned about egg laying as much as we are about friendliness. What breed do you all recommend? what breeder do you recommend?
Thank you!

Hi welcome-byc.gif

Glad you could join us here! I'm sure all your family will really enjoy your new chicken adventures. It really is a hobby the whole family can enjoy. As for breeds there are many that are very friendly and enjoy the attention. Raising them from chicks is also a good way to friendly birds I have found. Our breed section is good place to check out ~ http://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy your time here on BYC frow.gif

In addition to the link Yorkshire coop has given you, this is a site I used a lot when researching breeds:

http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html

Just keep in mind that characteristics are generalities...each bird has it's own personality and may or may not fit the breed characteristics.

Have fun gearing up for a flock of you own!

G’Day from down under TBHacienda  :frow Welcome!

How exciting for you and your family; I am sure your children will enjoy and benefit from the chicken parent experience.

I have bantams who are definitely not known for their egg laying abilities and spend more time being broody than actually laying eggs.  However, my Pekins [bantam Cochins] are the cutest, sweetest little gals and each have their own chickenality.

I hope you enjoy BYC.  There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.  Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends ;)

Hello welcome to Backyard Chickens. One breed that I have that's really friendly is my Buff Brahma.
