My coop has posts of ventilation, at least 3 feet above the roost.this is my first year with no heat, and My "big Mama" has some pretty bad frostbite. She's been in for 24 hours and her neck between her waddles is now swelling.

Needless to say at -35 I regret not heating. Please help her and her 13 friends.

Wow......The black tissue is dead..........I am in Canada myself and I do heat my Coop...........

Vaseline help to prevent frost bite....................

Cheers!

Hey, I'm in Ottawa too, first year with chickens, so I just wanted to give you a bump and tell you I feel you. I was prepared for figuring all this out in February, but December?? Your hen doesn't look good :( maybe there's a farm vet near you that would be kind enough to give some advice over the phone?

Also, I second the vaseline - you may want to put some on the others' combs before they suffer the same. Not a long term solution, but I've been warming a couple of mine using my hands/body heat (kinda like holding your ear lobe to warm it up). I wonder if you have more ventilation than you need? Maybe you could cover (some of) it for a couple of days to keep them warm. I put a bulb in for a couple of hours yesterday but it's not something I want to do long term. Poor thing.
