Can a chicken be scared blind by an attack?

This seems unlikely, but last week one of my chickens was attacked by a hawk. My husband ran the hawk off, and Bossy seemed OK, other than some talon holes under her right wing. I put her in the coop with fresh water and warm mash, but she refused to move out of the corner for anything. She is just now (4 days) starting to move around a little, but seems to be finding food and water by feel... she hits the rims of the containers several times before actually getting her beak to its goal. She hasn't roosted and won't come out of the coop. This girl was the lone survivor of a coyote attack and later lost a toe to a weasel defending her chicks. She's always been such a fearless bird!
Any ideas what's wrong and how to care for her?

It sounds like she may have some head trauma. You may want to separate her with her own food/water if she seems like she's having a hard time finding them.

Offer her some poultry vitamins in her water - make sure she is drinking well, injured chickens can become dehydrated quickly. It won't hurt to give some extra protein like egg or tuna in addition to her normal feed.

Hopefully she will recover.

Hawks hunt with a snapping motion which can cause spinal nerve damage and internal injury.

Hopefully she'll rally. She apparently is quite the fighter!

Boy will she have tales to tell her next clutch of chicks.

She has survived enough attacks, I think she earns her place as a house chicken. Chickens don't get 9 lives like cats. If she has lost her sight she is a sitting duck for the next predator, and apt to be bullied by others in the flock or worse. Chickens tend to gang up and kill any with disability or illness.

You can check out "people with house chickens," thread.
