Knee Injury

I truly appreciate all the replies that have been freely given. It is that kindness and giving of oneself that adds so much to our on-line community, thank you so much for your time and efforts.

So the bottom line is a bone infection as deduced from what could be seen and read. I, unfortunately, did not know what to look for or how to state what I was looking at so your being able to work with what was provided is quite impressive to my lay mind. With your help and reasoning, I now feel that I can better recognize this problem in the future if it ever happens again. However, if I do come across it again I suppose a quick ending to the suffering is about all that can be done as the antibiotics that I administered had no effect on this bird. (?)

Or, perhaps I should have gone at the treatments differently? What should I have done to battle such an infection?

To treat a disease there are 3 things that are involved. Agent (usually a pathogen), Host (animal), and environment. If we used a common one known to most poultry people, Coccidiosis. Coccidiosis: agent is Coccidia, host is usually a chick, and environment is a warm moist environment (brooder). There are three ways you can try to treat the disease. You can go direct, treat the agent, in this example Coccidia. We usually use Corrid to treat the pathogen. If you treat the host, such as using a probiotic or vaccine. Some way to improve the host so they can fight the agent. In this example, a prevention would be Amprolium, but as a treatment, probiotic of some sort to help improve absorption. The third is the environment. Change the environment so it's beneficial to the host, or hostile to the agent. In this example, Coccidia loves warmth and moisture. Change the bedding often, make it a dry environment. If you the chick was old enough, remove heat and dry the environment so it's hostile to Coccidia.
