I am excited to start a new year on a new adventure with chickens. I'm building my coop after reading everything I could find and I still don't know what breed of chick's I'll get, but I want them to be friendly. I look forward to being a part of this fun group! I'm in Bossier City, LA.

Welcome to BYC! As for friendly chicken breeds, everyone has their picks, but there are always outliers on both sides. Good luck and welcome to the crazy world of chickens!

If you haven't already done so, check out the Learning Center. There are all sorts of helpful articles there, including one called "Pickin' the Right Fricken' Chicken"...it brings up some good points to keep in mind when selecting birds.

Good luck and have fun!

! Great to officially welcome you aboard! Ah, so many chicken choices - and everyone has their favorites. For my money, my favs have always been redstars (red sex-links), Speckled Sussex, Orpingtons, and Naked Necks. They have always been the most friendly among my flocks over the years. I tend to shy away from the Mediterranean class birds - leghorns, anconas, etc...good layers but always seemed a little jumpy and nervous. Good luck to you and your spring chickens!!

Welcome!

I hope you enjoy BYC. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

Some breeds are generally docile, Buff Orps, Cochins, Black Australorps, etc. But all breeds(of chicks) may benefit from socialization starting early in life.
