Floating Catfish Food, Yay or Nay?

I saw an interesting article about incorporating "floating catfish food" into your chicken feed as a way to increase protein content. Opinions, anyone? Is there a brand that's better than others? I worry about Mercury content.
 
No idea about any of the Mercury stuff. but fish food is high protein, what is its cost. We do not have a lot of catfish ponds up here in the frozen hinterlands...

What are the ingredients in the feed?

I can not see why it would be too bad for them. They eat anything.
 
On the other hand, why? It makes more sense to me to feed a good balanced complete feed, with treats on the side, rather than 'reinventing the wheel'. A 20% protein all-flock feed works fine, and will also be less expensive than adding other stuff to a marginal diet. Mary
 
I am not that huge of a fan of commercial feeds. It is like a vet told me when I said we don't feed our dogs table scraps.

I said " Because everyone says you shouldn't"

He said " No, the dog food companies originated and spread that to increase dog food sales"

I think there is a ton of that in chicken feed companies too. If you can free range it is even more so a fable.

Higher protein? Cheaper?

I have no idea.. Why not feed it if it is handy cheap and nearby?

Balanced for chickens or balanced to sell more to humans to feed to chickens. I prefer to buy my fed off local farmers and skip the step where I hand Purina a wad of cash for the privilege of selling me something I can get that is just as good from nature or a Farmer.
 
I always applaud healthy skepticism. But I also recommend employing healthy common sense. Major label feed companies know their markets. They wouldn't stay in business if chickens and ducks that ate their feeds sickened and died. This certainly doesn't preclude individuals knowledgeable in poultry nutrition from obtaining ingredients and mixing their own feeds. But most folks lack the time and knowledge. Feeding commercial nutritionally balanced feeds are a great way to assure your flock is getting everything it needs.

As for feeding table scraps to pets, I know way too many families with obese cats and dogs. Chickens also can become victims of too many table scraps. It's far too easy to accidentally feed the wrong kind of table scraps and have your chickens pay the price in crop disorders and fatty livers.
