I have a little bantam hen that had a slight prolapse trying to lay her first egg. We pushed the tissue back in and applied preparation H. She laid a soft shelled egg after the first night.

Some of the prolapsed tissue is slightly black from either pecking or frostbite. It's day three, and she continues to push it out with more coming out each time. It's not a lot, about a 1/2 inch, it started with millimeters. How long do I give her before deciding culling is the best?

I don't think she will stop pushing it out, should I just leave her and see or put her down? She is sitting hunched in the crate where before she was relaxed.

Has anyone experienced fixing this or will it be chronic? Thank you in advance for any insight.
 
You could put her in a dark room with no light it will make her not want to lay and the problem might fix itself if you try this let her stay in the dark room for a couple days and the check her for blood. If she still has wet blood on her I would call it.
 
Thanks, for your advice, she's been sitting in my mostly dark basement since Friday night. It has been bitterly cold here and I have been cleaning her bottom daily, so for now she's inside.

I am going to take a wait and see approach now as the tissue doesn't want to stay in. It's sad because otherwise she a alert and healthy looking chicken. There's no fresh blood, just some black tissue which is probably why I think she's pushing it out.
 
Interesting list, I didn't know we had that many vets in Wisconsin who would see chickens.

Unfortunately taking her to the vet isn't an option here as we are more rural and livestock vets won't see chickens. Those small animal vets that do will charge a lot to do so. Thank you though. We do a lot of our own vetting on our livestock because of it.
 
I've got one with a similar problem, maybe a little more severe. Like you mentioned, it's either scabbed over pretty bad or frostbitten. I'm leaning heavily toward scab. Though I'm not sure why it would have scabbed? I knew I had one that was laying soft or shell-less eggs. Guess this is her. I gave her a good soaking and got most of it cleaned up. She just keeps pushing it right back out though. I will probably cull her tomorrow if there's no improvement overnight. I tried to take pictures but, as I'm sure many of us have experienced, it's hard to keep a chicken still with one hand while snapping a picture with the other.

We decided to cull her tonight as she hadn't improved at all since Friday and I couldn't see anyway that it would. She wouldn't eat or drink and wasn't pooping either. It broke my heart, but I don't think there was any way she was going to improve since she kept pushing it out, and it slowly was coming out more each time.

Sorry about your hen too, it's an unfortunate situation for both of us.
