Hi everyone, due to concerns about safety from predators I am not able to free-range a few of my chickens -mostly my two silkies, and a blind older hen, and a one-legged chick (when she grows up). So I'm looking into growing fodder for them, and I have a few questions:
1) Do chickens actually like fodder? Some people have said they just like the seeds, other people say they'll eat the whole thing. What have you experienced?
2) Are there any good, small fodder systems available to buy? The only one I could find was the Micro Fodder kit from Half-Pint Homestead, that feeds up to 5 laying hens. Even that one's a bit pricey ($150). Does anyone have experience with this company? Is it worth the cost? Other companies you'd recommend? (If it works out well, I may end up getting a bigger size, but to start with I want a small one.)
3) Alternatively, are there any good ways to build your own fodder system? I was reading up on it and some designs seemed pretty simple, BUT I'm not gonna be around to water 4 times a day as I work 12 hour shifts. A timer would be great but I'm not super tech savvy. Suggestions?
4) Is it possible to grow fodder without the full set-up of PVC pipes, tubes, etc. that I've seen? I mean, if it's just for a few birds, I probably only need a couple trays. I don't even know if it would be feasible to do that though.
